Exeter v Wrington Vale
Holders Exeter travelled to Mizzymead Sports Centre, Nailsea, near
Bristol to compete in the first half of the 2001 Exeter v Wrington Vale
Challenge match and came away with a slim 19-17 lead. Exeter won the
125-up games 14-10 with Wrington showing fighting spirit winning
the 75-up games 7-5. The latter games played under the Cannon’s Cup
rules whereby only cannon and losers are permitted, potting the red
attracts no points and ends your break. The second half of the match
took place early November in Sidwell Snooker Club, Exeter, with
handicaps adjusted, based on first half performances and current form.
After a ding-dong battle the 125-up games ended with honours even at
12-12 and with the Wrington Vale format Cannons Cup rules games to
come, a close finish was on the cards. We weren’t to be disappointed,
the match went to the final game with Wrington needing to win the last
game to draw level for the overall match. After an intriguing battle Dave
Riggs (Exeter) ran out 75-72 and the overall challenge result from the
two matches was 60-58 in Exeter’s favour.
Sidwell SC – Monthly Handicap

was in sparkling form defeating another newcomer to the competition
Justin Cole (owe 40) 200-107 in the final. In the earlier rounds Brian
Harvey posted the best break of the day with 104, also one of 80.
Other notable breaks coming from Bill Andress 94, 74 and 52; Chris
Mitchell 84, 50; Mike Allen 65 and 50; and Justin Cole 52.
