LEEDS AMATEURS PLAY MISS ROBERTS

Miss Ruby Roberts commenced on November 6 a series of
ten games of 500 up against local amateurs, at the King
Edward Restaurant, Leeds. For her first opponent Miss
Roberts had Mr. Walter Varrell, of Leeds. Her leading
breaks were 20, 19, and 25; and, on the other hand, Mr.
Varrell had breaks of 60, 30, 31, 27, and 50 twice), and
eventually won easily, the final scores being:—Mr. Varrell,
500; Miss Roberts, 224.

In the evening Miss Roberts met Mr. H. Saffer. Leading
breaks by Miss Roberts were 21, at her first scoring
bout, 38, 20, 27, 20, 39, 38, 21, 22, and 30; and Mr. Saffer’s
best contributions were 24, 23, 21, and 23. Final scores:—
Miss Roberts, 500; Mr. Saffer, 359.

Mr. A. A. Holgate, Leeds, was the first opponent on
November 7 of Miss Roberts, who eventually ran out with
60 unfinished, all made off the red ball. Scores:—Miss
Roberts, 500; Mr. Holgate, 399. Breaks: Miss Roberts,
60, 55, 28, 23; Mr. Holgate, 46, 32, 31, 20.

In the evening Miss Roberts was opposed by Mr. H.
Dawson, who holds the amateur championship of Leeds,
and won by 67 points. The breaks by Miss Roberts were
42, 27, 21, 41 (39 off the red), 42, and 19; Mr. Dawson’s
best were 22, 33, 22, 25, 40, 21, and 35. Scores:—Mr.
Dawson, 500; Miss Roberts, 433.

Master Harry Taylor, amateur champion of Bradford,
played Miss Roberts on November 8, and started well with
a break of 66, which was immediately eclipsed by Miss
Roberts with 71. Scores:—Miss Roberts, 500; Master
Taylor, 438. Breaks: Miss Roberts, 71, 55, 33, 21 (twice),
and 20 (twice). Master Taylor, 66, 48, 45, 28, 29, and 20.

In the evening Miss Roberts had Mr. P. Knowles, Heckmondwike,
as her opponent. Best breaks by Mr. Knowles
were 47, 26, 64, 20 (twice), 91—the biggest break of the
week—22, and 28 (unfinished). The only breaks by Miss
Roberts were 21 and 26. Closing scores:—Mr. Knowles,
500; Miss Roberts, 271.

Meeting Mr. W. Roslington, Leeds, on November 9, Miss
Roberts ran to “game” with an unfinished break of 42, all
off the red ball. Scores: Miss Roberts, 500; Mr. Roslington,
474. Breaks: Miss Roberts, 44, 42, 32, 31, and 26; Mr.
Roslington, 54.

In the evening Miss Roberts was opposed by Mr. J.
Henry, who won the best game of the week by six points,
only, the final scores being:—Mr. Henry, 500; Miss Roberts,
494. Breaks: Mr. Henry, 39, 32, 31 (twice), 27, 22, 21;
Miss Roberts: 38, 36, 35, 32, 25, 24, 21 (twice).

On the final day Miss Roberts’s opponent was Mr. J. W.
Vine, amateur ex-champion of Leeds. Miss Roberts was
100 ahead at 274—174, and won easily by 113 points. Final
scores:—Miss Roberts, 500; Mr. Vine, 387.

The tenth and last game of the series was played in the
evening between Miss Roberts and Mr. G. Boyce, Holbeck
Pitt Club, Mr. G. Boyce won a most interesting game by
30 points. Final scores:—Mr. Boyce, 500; Miss Roberts,
470.
