The Amateur Billiard Player : October 1996

Professional Scene

In most events this year, we hope to start on day one of the event at the main venue
with 32 entries. If there are more than 32 entries, qualifying matches will have to be played in
either England or India, or both. It depends on the number of entries and common sense
applies. We will endeavour to ensure that English players, including continental, do not have
to travel to India to play qualifying matches and that of course applies to Indians coming to
England or Europe for other tournaments.

Because of this extension in our numbers at main events it has been decided that the
top 26 players available on the ranking list for next season will be seeded to the main event
in all tournaments. This would leave 6 qualifying places from India and Europe on a
proportional basis subject to the entries received from the areas after the ranked players
have entered.

Also enclosed is a detailed schedule of the prize moneys for all events. This is an
unusual step since generally, except for the UK events, they are sent out individually before
each tournament with entry forms.

It does, however, enable members to plan in advance which events they would wish
to enter, since there are obvious financial implications.

Members should note that this year the provisional prize fund has been increased
from £120.000 (1995/96) to £257,600 for the current season. However, it is important to note
that all travel and hotel costs are now to be met by the players.

The distribution of ranking points in all events will still be linked to the number of
entries. With 16-32 entries the Winner will receive 4 points. Over 32 entries to 64 attracts 5
points. The World Championship is the exception, as double points are awarded for each
winning match. The Winner receives 10 points.

[A reminder that ranking points over a 3 year count back are taken to produce the world
rankings list.]
The calendar of events has some provisional data, please take note of this. It is also
possible that additional events may occur, of which due notice will be given
Lastly, members are reminded that withdrawal from an event, once entry has been
received and the draws confirmed, has to be subject to the rules of the W.P.B.S.A. and the
grounds of sickness or accident must be evidenced by medical documents.

DARLEY DALE

This year’s Tournament will take place on Sunday 3rd November at the Whitworth
Institute, Darley Dale. There will be the usual two sessions. The afternoon starts at 1.30 p.m.

and the evening at 5.45 p.m. Tickets are £2.50 per session, and tea in the adjoining hotel
plus evening buffet is £5.00. The players invited this year by the Whitworth Billiards
Committee are Norman Dagley, Mike Russell, Peter Gilchrist and new English Champion
Chris Shutt.

Tickets for this event are strictly limited and anyone interested should ring Jim
McCann on (01629) 734269 as soon as possible. This Tournament is now in its fifteenth year
and always seems to produce excellent Billiards. The highlight of last year was Mike
Russell’s brilliant break of 525 unfinished.
